I am here to advise you that waiting to tell your husband that he is eating brownies made from black beans after his bite – while highly entertaining – is not recommended.
You’re all welcome.
But then we both agreed if I hadn’t told him he wouldn’t have known the difference.
These black bean brownies were so good I was licking the batter as everything was coming together. The beans make the base of the brownies so creamy and the coffee brings out the rich cocoa flavor. Combine all ingredients, add any toppings you desire (try chocolate chips, nuts, or peanut butter ), and pop in the oven for 25 minutes and you’re done. And best of all, they taste just like the real deal!
- 1 (15 oz) can black beans, rinsed and drained
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 tsp instant coffee
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup raw sugar
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1/4 cup coconut or olive oil
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Optional toppings: Chocolate Chips, Walnuts
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine all ingredients (except for toppings and chocolate chips) in a food processor and blend until smooth. Mix in chocolate chips. Pour batter into greased baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean.

Wow, never heard of this kind before. Sound delicious. π
Jasmine says
They were! Sounds strange at first, I know π
Stephanie Leduc says
Haha that is exactly what I do with my boyfriend, let him taste it before I tell him what is inside. I love that you added the coffee, it always makes for a richer chocolate taste. I’ve never gotten around to making black bean brownies but I am so tempted π
Jasmine says
You should! And it’s always more fun to let them guess what’s in it π beans are the last thing you’d expect!
Josette@thebrookcook says
I would have waited to tell my husband too!
I’m not sure he’d try them otherwise… :/
Where is the trust!??! π
Jasmine says
That’s what I’m saying! Can’t a girl get a little credit around here?! π
Mani (A New Life Wandering) says
I have a black bean brownie recipe meaning to try. I’ll have to after we finish the batch of cookies I made a couple of days ago. I will tell my husband about the beans after he tastes them, if he is grossed out, more for me! But I think he won’t care too much.
I like your recipe too.
Jasmine says
You’ll have to let me know how that recipe works!! It’s more fun to wait and see if they can guess what’s in it π Tyler reached for a second helping!
Tasty Eats Ronit Penso says
The brownies look so creamy and moist! I’ll give this a try soon. π
Jasmine says
Thank you! They were pretty good – I hope you do! π
Amanda Brooks says
I’ve always heard about people using black beans in baked goods, but I’ve never actually tried it. Maybe, instead of the black bean burgers I was going to make tomorrow, I will make brownies instead π They look delicious!

Jasmine says
Thank you!! You should, though black bean burgers sound pretty awesome, too:) I was a little wary the first time I made them but I’m totally convinced that they make great brownies! Who would have thought?
Amanda Brooks says
You have convinced me! π
Sadie's Nest says
They look delicious! I love this type of thing! I’ve done chick pea chocolate chip cookies… can’t wait to try this!
Jasmine says
I’ve never tried that!! How were they?
Sadie's Nest says
Surprisingly delicious! I’ve made them a few times now (because they make me feel healthy?)
Lynz Real Cooking says
yumm, love the story Jasmine, these are really something I need to try!
Jasmine says
Thanks, Lynz! I have a bad track record – like the time I didn’t tell him that the mashed potatoes were actually made from cauliflower π
Lynz Real Cooking says
ha ha well what he doesn’t know?? haha they look amazing!!! Really you would’t be able to tell?
goatsandgreens says
I just had to click on something that said “black bean brownies”. I love good quality dark chocolate, and I love black beans — I would never have thought of putting the two together!
Jasmine says
It sounds like the weirdest combination! Crazy how it works so well together. It does make me wonder what other weird concoctions are out there, haha

Black bean brownies are SO good! They really are delicious + everyone usually loves them [unless you tell them ahead of time + they get super skeeved out lol]. I’ll have to try your recipe!!
Jasmine says
Haha, yes, I love them!! And I don’t mind having a dessert with some nutritional value in them π
Unknown Adventure says
I just made these and they are FANTASTIC! I sipped some red wine while nibbling my brownie and couldn’t help but think about how kindly I was treating myself π
Jasmine says
Thank you!! I’m so happy to hear that!!! π
Sadie's Nest says
Hi Jasmine! I’m making your brownies today! Sorry to bother you, I was wondering: it says “baking dish”, I was thinking the usual 8×8 or 9×9, but yours is rectangular and it doesn’t look as big as a 9×13… but I really can’t tell by the picture. (Sorry I am so annoying) And for the topping it says 1/4 chocolate chips and I am going with 1/4 the bag not a 1/4 cup! Lol! π And BTW you do not need to post this, but if you get this message any time soon it might prove helpful!
Jasmine says
Hi Sadie!! I’m sorry I am just seeing this now! You are definitely not annoying. π The container I used was a rectangular shape, but it was a lot smaller than a 9×13! I don’t have the exact measurements, but I a 9×9 would be perfect. I mainly used the one I did for the photo. I think for topping you really could put as many chocolate chips as you desired, so anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/4 bag would be perfect, lol! I hope I’m not too late! Also, I added a “contact me” option on the top of my page that goes directly to my email so I should get that faster. I hope you had a great weekend!
Sadie's Nest says
I did use a 9×9 dish and it was perfect. The brownies were moist and chocolatey! π
Jasmine says
I’m so glad! I’m so sorry that I missed your message!! π
Sadie's Nest says
No worries!
