Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee

September 14, 2016

It’s only Wednesday and I have already typed in, “Is it okay if my dog eats…” into Google three times this week. And it’s always after our dog Sam, who is clumsy in all aspects of his life with terrible depth perception and hind legs that don’t work well with his front, becomes a 45 lb. stealth ninja warrior with the ability to steal food from the counter and pantry without anyone realizing he’s there.

So in case any of you are wondering, bananas are okay, oatmeal is okay, and popcorn will not only increase a dog’s caloric intake for the day, but unpopped kernals can cause tooth damage, become lodged in the mouth and cause tooth infections, dental disease or an upset stomach, and don’t worry, your favorite pink ankle sock will pass through in 2-3 weeks.

Aren’t you glad that you have me to enlighten you in all aspects of life?

So I hope you believe me when I say that I really needed my cup of coffee this morning because 1) it’s cheaper than therapy and 2) I’ve been on a cold-brewed iced coffee kick that I can’t kick for weeks.

Cold-Brewed Iced Coffee

Cold-brewed coffee is unlike hot-brewed coffee and iced coffee (which is hot brewed coffee that has been cooled and served with ice) because it involves immersing coffee grounds in water for an extended period of time. Cold-brewed coffees are less bitter than your typical cup of coffee with a hint of sweetness and contains more caffeine (hallelujah!).

I ground whole coffee beans to a medium-coarse grind and using the ratio from this NY Times recipe, submerged them in cold, filtered water in a glass jar for around 12 hours overnight. Simply strain coffee through a sieve or cheesecloth and serve over ice with a splash of almond milk (my favorite!).

Ingredients
  1. 1/3 cup ground coffee (medium-coarse grind is best)
  2. 1 1/2 cups cold, filtered water
  3. Almond milk (optional)
Instructions
  1. In a jar, stir together coffee and 1 1/2 cups cold water. Cover and let rest at room temperature overnight or 12 hours.
  2. Strain twice through a coffee filter, a fine-mesh sieve or a sieve lined with cheesecloth. In a tall glass filled with ice, mix equal parts coffee concentrate and water, or to taste. If desired, add milk.

I love love love cold brew! I’ve been hooked on making my own too. I’ve also been hooked on ordering espresso shots over ice at Starbucks. Like a latte, but less calories and waaaaay less expensive.

Cold-brewed coffee is the best- So much smoother and richer than drip! I always make it this way, even in the winter.

It is! I was wondering if I would make it through the winter, but I think I’d miss it if I didn’t. 🙂

Thank you, Roberta! It’s my favorite picture of him and I’m pretty sure it’s his “you can’t be mad at this face!” face. He’s lucky to have sweet friends all the way from Malta!!

Although not a coffee drinker for some years now, I’m tempted to try your cold-brewed iced coffee. I’m sure the addition of almond milk only enhanced the rich flavor. Thanks so much for bringing this to Fiesta Friday, have a wonderful weekend!

I have never heard of cold-brewed coffee and will definitely give it a go. Love the stories about your dog, Sam. Hope he sticks to dog food from now on and leaves your socks alone.

Our kids are always googling what their dog Harry can eat! He’s not big on dog food– but loves rice & chicken! Funny. Fun to meet Sam– he sounds like lots of crazy fun! hugs!
